It starts with a serious psychological issue that comes from seeing a traumatic event. During the Vietnam War, the mental health issue was placed on a larger stage for the world. During the Civil War, it was called “Da Costa’s Syndrome” from Jacob Mendez Da Costa (Da Costa JM 2016). It was first given attention after the soldiers shared utter fatigue, exaggeration of symptoms, tremors, palpitation, and fear. It was suggested the symptoms were tied to abandonment of challenges. In 1871, he reported that all of these issues were related stress in war times and increased fear. It increased during the civil war and the First World War.
This disorder is referred to as Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which shows the severe, chronic anxiety disorder that comes from a life threatening event that alters the soldier’s behavior and increase negative thoughts (Friedman, M. J. (2013). (2014). There will be several times where faith will impact the lifestyle and values of the person. The spiritual side must be considered and acknowledge for the personal growth of the client in how they approach, understand, contract future issues that apply to themselves. When the spiritual assessment is included then it helps the social worker to teach faith to their clients. As a result of skillful assessment the social worker will be equipped to present faith as a presenting problem to help integrate faith within the sessions. The hard part happens when a social worker attempts to involve faith into social work because it feel useless or not a good starting point for the session. This would be a problem with a soldier that may not believe in religion anymore due to traumatic events in their lives. So if the social worker is uncomfortable then the client will be too. This assessment will help the client out in the field if that is a part of the treatment. It is a way of sparking personal growth within the person and helping to install hope into the session.
