There are many factors that play into the outcome of HRT. Studies have shown that there is a greater risk with combined estrogen/progestin therapy than that of unopposed estrogen therapy. However, there are many observational studies that have found the difference in risks to be small or negligible. Another key factor in determining whether HRT causes breast cancer is that of duration of use. It becomes more significant after 5 years of use. In a 1991 study, the data showed that an annual increase risk was 2.3% per year after 5 years use of both combined estrogen/progestin and unopposed estrogen.
