Any controversial item being legalized such as marijuana requires restrictions to reach an agreement with those in the opposite mindset. Ballotpedia states,”Proposition 64 would legalize the recreational use of marijuana for adults aged 21 years or older. Smoking would be permitted in a private home or at a business licensed for on-site marijuana consumption” (Ballotpedia,2016). Restrictions are needed to keep the environment safe from the dangerous effects that people might have. The location and age are very crucial to cut down the amount of people can use marijuana in certain locations. Citizens that attempt to obtain marijuana will have to visit a licensed business and have a limit to posses 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana. Many people on that are against the legalization of marijuana believe that the number of highway fatalities and impaired driving will go up when passing Proposition 64. NHTSA states,”In 2014, there were 9,967 people killed in alcohol-impaired- driving crashes, an average of 1 alcohol-impaired-driving fatality every 53 minutes”(NHTSA,2016). However, alcohol has caused more highway fatalities than marijuana has and really impairs the driver when driving a vehicle.
