This is a significant advantage for law enforcement because a suspect can be identified as being in a particular location by using facial recognition. Another advantage of facial recognition technology is that it “is already in use under controlled situations. For example, when travelers approach border police for a travel document check, facial biometrics can easily check travel documents and watch lists, providing passport control officers an opportunity to spend more time on higher risk travelers” (Hess 2010 Prevention para 3). On April 15, 2013, there was a terrorist attack in Boston, Massachusetts, during the Boston Marathon. The Boston police tried to use facial recognition, but, unfortunately, the facial recognition software did not recognize the suspects. Alleged perpetrators Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were both in the database. Despite having an array of photos of the bombers, the system could not come up with a match. Many people think life is like what they see on TV shows, but this is real life. Procedures take time, and one of the reasons why facial recognition software could not identify the brothers was because “facial recognition systems can have limited utility when a grainy, low-resolution image captured at a distance from a cell phone camera or surveillance video is compared with a known, high-quality image.” ( Farivar, 2013, Para 3 ) I believe they were too far away from the cameras for facial recognition to work. The Boston police commissioner Edward Davis said to the journalists from the Washington Post
