In the average life span, a human will experience extreme variations in temperature. Due to the weather conditions we face it is common to reach temperatures that are below the average temperature. When the body experiences low temperatures it will begin to lose heat and the normal functions begin to reduce causing many issues. According to Canadian Medical Association Journal, “Hypothermia is defined as a core body temperature of 35°C (95°F) or lower. It should be treated as a medical emergency. Shivering is an early sign. Patients with severe hypothermia (core temperature less than 32°C) may appear dead or may have hypotension, apnea or cardiac arrhythmias. Hematologic, respiratory, renal and endocrine abnormalities are common in severe hypothermia.” 1 Hypothermia can result from many different scenarios. A common …show more content…
Young children are not able to control their body temperatures as well as an adult would. This would be due to their lack of size which promotes the self-generation of body heat. According to Jennifer FitzGerald, “In an effort to understand the extent of the problem, nursing staff at a large urban hospital conducted a chart review of LPIs. Data indicated that 80% of the LPI population had experienced at least one episode of hypothermia. Based upon these findings, nursing staff began to question their current infant care practices. In response to the problem, a task force of maternal-child nurses was developed and a new LPI Thermoregulation Guideline was created and implemented on the maternal-child unit.”2 New born babies that are in the hospital face extreme cold temperature when they are in the hospital. When the newborn is born, they must be swaddled immediately and ensured that their body temperature does not go below 35 degrees Celsius. If the nurses are not careful with newborn babies, the baby maybe affect by hypothermia which could lead to many serious
