Sometimes they are in a crisis so they do not accept their illness or disability so this can create a displacement of different unacceptable behaviour towards himself or herself and to the carers, so carers will have to take into consideration any form of distress shown by the individual. People may repress how they really feel about their illness or their need for care so can’t take a full part in planning their care. In other cases, help can be provided with psychotherapy or emotional support. This is allowing the service user to take a more active part in choices in their care as their emotional needs is being considered and if they want to be more aware of how this can affect the choices they make. Understanding a service user’s inner turmoil and use of defence mechanisms can make the carer more empathetic and considerate when explaining choices and help someone to be fully involved in their care.
