Some influences of the bands of the 1990s include bands of the ‘60s and’70s. In the late 1960s, it is said that alternative music began. Artists like Velvet Underground, Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, and the Silver Apples all were from the ‘60s. Then in the ‘70s bands and artists like David Bowie, New York Dolls, Television, Nev, and T-Rex all influenced some of the first, mainstream bands. In the late 1980s some of the first bands to pave a path to success include R.E.M. and Hüsker Dü (New World Encyclopedia, Alternative Rock). The music also varied widely. In the ‘80s and earlier decades, alternative music was considered as any artist with an independent label. But after the prosperity of bands such as Nirvana and R.E.M., alternative music was seen as anything from jangle pop, post-hardcore punk, funk metal, punk pop, and experimental rock (All Music, Alternative Pop Rock).Due to the grunge-era introduced by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, many new artists were labeled as alternative so they could enter the popular media (New World Encyclopedia, Alternative Rock). Due to this confusion, alternative music was later defined as from or of punk roots (New World Encyclopedia, Alternative Rock). There is and was some sub genres too.
