Although their thoughts regarding racism are the same the way they confront racism is different. Coach Boone and Katherine are similar because they’re playing roles that face similar situations. Coach Boone had become the first African American coach in football history. He fought for his spot as the Head coach when he was being discriminated from all angles. He made the team unite and changed societies vision on African American people. On the other hand, Katherine also fought for her spot at NASA. She became the first African American women to attend a board meeting. She also achieved other accomplishments such as helping the USA launch a shuttle into space. Both Coach Boone and Katherine will go down as iconic figures in African American history. The way both movies confront racism is different. Some are similar and some of them are different. The symbols that are similar are Gary’s girlfriend's handshake with Julius and the gift of a pearl necklace to Katherine by her co-workers. Both these symbols represent a form of friendship and acceptance. Towards the beginning of Remember The Titans, when Gary introduces Julius to his girlfriend and Julius put his hand forward for a handshake, she doesn’t shake his hand and says, “Gary, you might’ve excepted these people, but I haven’t.” Then, towards the end of the story, before Julius goes in on defense, Gary’s girlfriend comes up to Julius and say “I don’t think we had a chance to meet before,” and she puts forward her hand and Julius shakes it. This shows acceptance because Gary’s girlfriend accepted Julius. It also shows friendship because they have become friends. In Hidden Figures, Katherine bursts ut saying she can’t afford pearls because people of her skin colour don’t get paid enough money to afford pearls. The towards the end of the story, Katherine’s co-workers gift her a pearl necklace. I think this shows friendship and acceptance too because, at the beginning of the film, no one would’ve done this for her, but now she has helped NASA accomplish great
