Anthony Johnson was a black slave for several years, however later in his life he gained his freedom. After Johnson received freedom, he became a slave owner of white slaves himself. So one could ask if slavery did not associate with racism, then what does it depend on? The fact of the matter is, it had none to do with one’s color of skin, but in the aspects such of religion, where one was born, perhaps social class as well. Instead of being a matter over skin color, racism came in the form of having different cultures.
Because racism was more about being uncivilized, slavery was the first to appear. White citizens believed that their culture was the correct way to live. It was the idea of indentured servitude that slowly lead into an issue of becoming slavery. During the growth of slavery, the owners started making decisions on how their slaves should be treated.
