Crime and Punishment Part I, Chapters 1-3: Raskolnikov is the protagonist of the story. Starting from the beginning of the story, readers infer that Raskolnikov is a nervous man. Although his name is not mentioned until he gets to the pawnshop, it is mentioned that he is a poor man the owes his landlady money. Raskolnikov does not mind being poor but he is afraid of confronting the landlady. Then he realizes that he gets afraid of small things which is ridiculous but does not get afraid when he thinks of doing something really bad. Raskolnikov is described as a tall man with brown hairs and eyes. Ivanova is a old lady that owns a pawnshop. She is around sixty years old and is short. She has a trouble cough which makes Raskolnikov look at her in a revolting manner. Ivanova is a harsh women that is not pleased with what Raskolnikov has to offer. “It is not really worth anything; you bring me nothing but trash my friend.” (Dostoevsky, 5) Then Marmeladov comes up in the story after Raskolnikov leaves the pawnshop.He is a respected man because he works as a titular counselor. He believes he is different from everyone in society and belittles them by giving them looks of disgusts. “It would have been different had he come across any of his former friends, whom he wished in any case to avoid.” (Dostoevsky, 2) Raskolnikov becomes tired of the way he is living and does not want to live that way anymore. “He was heavily in debt to his landlady and shrank from meeting her.” (Dostoevsky, 1) He is tired of owing people money and having to rely on people to give him money.
