This paper will focus on a theory that I have chosen that will best explain why the offender would commit a certain crime. In doing so, I will talk about robbery, what it is, according to UCR definition, the rates in which crime occurs nationally and in the State of NY. Characteristics of the offenders and their race, gender and age. Also I will be discussing the potential relationship between the victim and the offender and its data. The first part of this paper I will be using UCR and NCVS data. The second part of this paper will introduce the theory I’ve chosen which is Rational Choice Theory and I will discuss about what it is, its important parts and concepts and use that to apply it to my crime. In other words, I will present why my Rational Choice Theory best applies to Robbery.

RCT is part of the classical school which was developed by the Italian social thinker Cesare Beccaria. People who commit a crime are not afraid of law breaking because they enjoy what comes to them and want to take even bigger chances. “RCT is based on simple assumption that human beings are rational and self-interest motivated in their everyday actions” (Sinisa,2002). Its concepts include three important key factors to committing a crime. First is if they rob a bank for example, do they need the money for something important? Second, how well do they perform with the crime? Do they know what they’re doing or just Diaz 5 going in for fun? Lastly, is them robbing, gets them a reward for it and feel that what they did is a good thing for themselves?
