1. Why do these errors occur?
Basically, there are three main tenses which is Past, Present and Future time. These three main tenses do have their respective subcategories which are simple, progressive, prefect and prefect progressive. Mistakes relating to tense may be made for a number of reasons. Students are uncertain on how to form the present or past tense of certain verbs. These situation happened as accuracy is not their priority and grammar errors are always been taken for granted. They don't think that grammar point is important. Even the native speakers tend to do these kinds of mistakes as they always tend to be over confident on their tenses. They are used to break down a natural language sentence into its constituent parts, also known as syntactic categories, including both lexical categories (parts of speech) and phrasal categories. A grammar that uses phrase structure rules is a type of phrase structure grammar. Therefore when the students are unable to identify the correct tenses, they also will not be able to identify the types of tenses correctly. However, in some cases like the present progressive, the helping verbs like is and are will help the student to identify the tenses. PSR is practical to be used in teaching the progressive tenses but it is not practical been used in teaching simple past tenses or past perfect tenses. How long the tenses do should be taught in school? In my opinion, tenses are a flexible part of grammar and it can be learned formally or indirectly. Teacher can teach tenses in classroom using the textbook or exercise book. However, fun activities on tenses can be held under English Club or even the students themselves are given the freedom to carry out the activities on the way they prefer. Therefore, there is no time limit to learn grammar especially tenses as tenses are one of the most essential lessons that the students need to understand in order to excel in their English Language.
5. Apply concept and feed forward.
Teacher can apply the concept of scaffolding in teaching the students on tenses.
