The foundations of a person centered framework might not work within certain clients. For example, a client might feel overly attached in certain relationships, thus continuing this pattern in the client-therapist relationship. When boundary crossings happen, it is the therapist’s job to step in and make sure these issues are addressed before continuing with treatment. This could hinder or prevent progress for this client. It is important to understand and become cognizant of what is truly beneficial for the client’s treatment in therapy. To reach a higher level of authenticity, the therapist helps the client discover which direction will lead to an authentic life (Carlson, 2003). Similarly, within the client centered framework, existential therapy has similar drawbacks. A collectivist individual may not take value in being within an existential therapist and may need to seek alternative therapies. This therapy also may not sit well with those that are in a concrete mindset or prefer a more directive form of treatment.
