More specifically, this term is described when the person has no idea what to do or how things are done within the new environment, not enough knowledge about the area, as well as having no understanding of what is appropriate and inappropriate in certain situations. After a few weeks of arriving in a new place, the feeling of culture shock tends to start happening. This can be due to the language, people, activities, new foods and customs.
In this video “Culture Shock” many real life examples are shown of situations where refugees are experiencing cultural differences.
The first cultural difference identified is from Egide Aj Sabimana who comes from Burundi. He shows that he has never experienced watching television due to having no electricity in his home environment; which results in Egide having no knowledge of how to use the equipment. The refugee’s communication skills are affected by their first language and how it can strongly have an impacts on their capability as an adult to learn another language. This also includes the ability to learn how to read, write and speak that language.
We are also not aware of how many migrants were not offered the opportunity to learn or practice English and this has a huge effect when it comes to living in a country like Australia where the majority of the jobs require essential English standards.
We are also unaware of the difficulties associated with the migration experience such as:
• Getting used to different foods
• Adjusting to new society and
