To begin with, The Break portrays a loving and affirmative relationship between best friends Emily and , Ziggy. Before the scene of the assault, Ziggy decides to attend a party with Emily. At the party, a fight occurs, prompting Emily and Ziggy to try and get to safety.. Unfortunately, Ziggy is injured and loses Emily in an open field. Emily is later assaulted. While Emily gets placed in the hospital, Ziggy explains to her father that she “couldn't do anything. [She] didn’t do anything”(213). Considering Ziggy and Emily are best friends, Ziggy’s concerns lead her to believe that the assault could've been avoided if she hadn't lost Emily in the open field. Secondly, The Colour Purple showcases a sisterly bond between the likes of Celie and Nettie. After running away from home, Nettie visits Celie at Misters home and resides for a bit until Mister forces Nettie out. Before Nettie goes, Celie asks her to write her letters while she’s gone. Nettie claims “nothing but death can keep her from it.”(18). Celie claims Nettie never wrote her but it’s later found out that Mister hid all of Nettie’s letters.
