There are three main types of bridges at the most basic level: arch, beam, and suspension. Suspension bridges, as the name implies, usually suspend over a large gap; for example a canyon or a river. These bridges were first used in 1826, in the form of a bridge crossing the Menai straits in England. Beam bridges are most commonly seen spanning highways, due to their inability to hold much weight. Therefore, they are rarely seen spanning more than 250 feet. Arch bridges are, as the name implies, most commonly arched over a river. A viaduct is a series of arches spanning a long distance, such as a river. There are two main types of arch bridges: steel and concrete. They differ not only in materials, but in looks as well. A concrete arch bridge has the arch below the roadway with poles known as spandrel columns in between. Italians have a president and a Senate, but more similar to British government, they have a Parliament. The Parliament consists of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. There is also the Prime Minister and his cabinet, the courts, and the armed forces. Italy’s armed forces consists of the army, the navy, the air force, and the Carabinieri. The Carabinieri are basically Italy’s police force, used both throughout the world and in Italy. Fun fact: There is no vice president in Italy. If the president becomes ill, the president of the Senate takes his place. If the president dies, a new presidential election is held
