A: Romantic
During the period of the late 1700s through 1800s grew a time known as the Romantic Era. It was a time where culture began to form itself as what was recognized to them as modern. There was a rise of political, economic, and social climate. In this period the styles, values, and conflicts of the individual formed. Although many believe Romanticism is about romance and adventure, there is more to it than just that. This period is also about emotion and spontaneity the individual experiences. A prominent idea and value was individualism. According to dictionary.com, individualism is defined as a social theory advocating the liberty, rights, or independent action of the individual. This Modern Era was totally opposite from the Romantic Era. It was no longer more important to have passion over reason, but it was brain rather than emotion. Rational thinking and scrutiny became more significant. Class, nation, and culture defined individuals. The Romantic period focused on the expressing yourself, your passions, and challenging the status quo but this time the meaning of individualism was shifted. As times changed in this Era and we see more countries going to war with each other, it just became more central for an individual to dedicate oneself to its country. It is almost like what was known as the true meaning of individualism died. For example, in the poem Easter by W.B. Yeats, he talks about those who have died for Irish Independence and how much he respects them for their dedication and sacrifice for something they believe in. Yeats continues to say; “A terrible beauty is born,” meaning that even though his people fought bloody battles and faced many deaths, he will always remember their self-sacrifice. This proves the shift with modern individualism because the Irish died for their country. The individual is no longer about oneself but it is more important for an individual to be strong, moral, courageous, and representing your nation as a
