When choosing the right assessment tool for your students you must keep in mind where they are in the reading process. When administering a running record the teacher should give a leveled text to a child, providing a quick introduction, then ask him or her to read about 100 words aloud. While the student is reading the teacher monitors a form that reproduces a portion of that leveled text. On this form, the teacher should note exactly what the child says and does as he or she reads the text, note the words the child has read correctly with a check mark, as well as if the child corrects themselves, omits words, or substitutes words to take the place of the words in the text. After the child finishes reading the text silently, the teacher should ask them to retell the text, considering how well they convey key details. Then the teacher asks a few simple questions about what the student has read, assessing both literal and inferential comprehension. Using a standard set of criteria, the teacher then determines if the child has understood the story well enough so that the student can try the same process again with a harder level
