God is holy, and the sacrificial system was the means by which God ordained for the people to atone for their sins and remain in right relationship with Him. According to Victor P. Hamilton (2015), “The first seven chapters are devoted to a description of the sacrifices ordained by God that bear on the perpetuation of the relationship of humankind with God. Worship without sacrifice is inconceivable. Wherever sin has driven a wedge between God and humankind, both sacrifice (the outer act) and penitence (the inner attitude) become incumbent upon the sinner” (p. 233).

The guilt offering was made to make restitution for offenses against the Lord or another person.
The deficiency of the system was that the offerings were made by the priest and was done yearly. So, the sacrifices had to be repeatedly done (Heb. 10:3). Another problem is also recorded in the Bible as it is written in Heb 10:11 (KJV) “And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:”
In the book of Hebrews, we would read about Jesus Christ as our High Priest whose sacrifice fulfilled God’s requirement once and for all. According to Heb 10:12 (KJV) ”But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;” and from the finished work of Jesus Christ at Calvary, we have been pardoned for our past sins, present sins, and future sins.
The Old Testament sacrificial system was just a shadow of our New Testament in the person of Jesus Christ who came not to do away with Law, God forbid, but to fulfill it. Jesus Christ is our mercy seat and His propitiatory death totally satisfied God the Father’s requirement for redeeming man and bringing us back into a right relationship with Him.
