A group of 30 of us went to Sawantwadi to do a case study on Rural settlement pattern. As we walk past the waters of Moti Talao Lake we can’t help but wonder how beautiful this city is, not just its external aspect but also a deeper beauty which lies in the form of a traditional culture that has still not faded. Welcome to Sawantwadi, a city between the borders of Maharashtra and Goa formerly known as Sunderwadi for its pristine beauty. As the civilisation is taking a turn towards the modern culture influenced from different parts of the world, we witness a fading of the exquisite culture and art. There are a number of places of which the culture and art are not known to a lot of people and is not given light. With the fading away of the culture and art, there is a future vision of seeing an extinct of these. These culture needs to be put spotlight on and given the encouragement and appreciation deserved. Technology has completely changed the mind of people. The machines used to produce different items are causing negligence in carrying forward the hard passion full handmade items. Over the years the culture has taken a step back to accommodate modern globalisation and thus making handicrafts a lost art.
Sawantwadi is not just a small city with a craft but it is one of the places that contribute to the wide culture and heritage India is proud of. Gradual decrease in the wooden toys making in the city of Sawantwadi in the state of Maharashtra gives a big hint towards the lone of extinction.
