The impact of mother’s mental illness on family life and children’s well-being is very important. The adolescent daughters are at risk of developing social, emotional and behavioral problems.The environment in which these adolescent girls grow affects their developmental and emotional well-being. It is quite challenging for them to care themselves and to manage the household at one time. They used to go through self-blaming, anger, aggression, anxiety and guilt. As a result of the stigma associated with their mother’s mental illness, they feel discredited, ashamed and were isolated from their peers and other community members. As noted earlier (Table 1.page ) the challenges included withdrawal, chastisement, avoidance, lack of opportunity, social alienation and social stigma. The common tendency found in them is to withdraw from the peer groups, social activities and other social concerns. The condition of the sick mother created obstacles in keeping the relationship with peer groups and other people. They did not want to attend gatherings. Participants described experiencing embarrassed by mother, leading them to avoid having friends over or to withdraw from social activities with peers. In an effort to accept by a peer group, these girls may avoid telling peers about their mother’s mental illness. So they withdraw from such activities because there is a possibility for others to know of the illness of their mother. They tried to stay away from such occasions. This finding is also supported by Tandon et al. (2009). In his study, he reported schizophrenia has very much associated with cognitive impairments, social withdrawal and low economic status. Illness –related characteristics and behavior might affect family interpersonal relationships and make children more worried and inattentive in school.
