In order to tackle this controversial problem, one must first know what is considered sexual assault. The United States Department of Justice defines sexual assault as “any type of sexual contact that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient.” Examples include rape and fondling. Essentially, it is the act of using force to express sexual behavior upon another person who did not agree to it.

I believe that the first step in combating the issue of sexual assault on college campuses is to first talk about it. The more people, especially victims, come out to speak about it, the more awareness will be brought to how severe the issue is. The victim’s confession must be taken seriously and adequate resources such as counseling and safety groups should be provided for them. Additionally, campuses can increase the number of police or security officers around especially during night times. This will ensure that students are more protected during night times. Students, more specifically, female students should also be advised to avoid vulnerable positions and places such as traveling alone at night or getting extremely intoxicated at parties. This is not an excuse for perpetrators to go from place to place thinking that it is okay to assault an individual because of the way they look or are
