The poet uses symbolism such as ‘square’, ‘tight’, ‘close’ and ‘stiff’ to show the rigidity in the dull world into which he is forced. The word ‘square’ is repeated many times in the text to convey the idea of and inflexible prison like situation. Edward is the creation of an elderly inventor who dies before he can replace Edward’s Scissors with conventional hands. The maternal Peg invites Edward into her home to be a part of her family. Her world is colourful but conformity is essential. He is initially welcomed by the community as an entertaining oddity, but cruelly rejected when things go wrong. Some of the techniques applied in this film are symbolisms, repetition and motifs. The symbolic use of colour highlights the distant differences between the two worlds. The colour black represents the gothic effect associated with Edward. The bright, pastel colours show the difference between Edward’s world and the suburbia. Falling snow is also a motif, it is repeated many times in the film. Snow represents the romance genre in contrast to the gothic genre. The scene where Kim dances when Edward is making the ice sculpture, pleases Kim as it never used to snow before he came. Edward tries his best to please Kim because he liked her.
