Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Social Phobia Social phobia, also known as social anxiety, is a very common disorder that many people struggle to cope with. It is characterized by a constant fear of social situations and an expectation of judgment or rejection from their peers (NIH). It can be caused by numerous circumstances, many of which stem from childhood experiences. Social phobia has a very optimistic outlook due to the many treatments available for people with this disorder.

There are many different types of therapy used to treat social anxiety such as cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, and social skills training. In recent years, social anxiety disorder has become recognized as a serious condition. This has led to many new pharmaceutical treatments (Hofmann & Otto, 2008). Medications such as anti-anxiety, beta-blockers, and antidepressants can help to control the symptoms of social anxiety. With these treatments many patients see a marked improvement on their condition.
Prognosis
Social phobia is one of the more manageable disorders. If treated, effectively, the symptoms of social anxiety can easily be controlled or even cured. The prognosis for this disorder is very positve. Medications and therapy have shown a high success rate.

Social anxiety is the excessive fear of social situations. It can be caused by childhood trauma, heredity, or many other factors. The symptoms of social anxiety disorder include unreasonable fear of social situations, social avoidance, and difficulty making and keeping friends.
