Does the sociological study of religion undermine one’s religious faith, make one’s religious faith stronger, or have no necessary implication for one’s religious faith?
Sociology as an applied science values religion not by the legitimacy of the religious theories, but by its role in the society which includes the practices, historical backgrounds, developments and universal themes of religion in the society. The curiosity of the study of a religion may not undermine it but to somebody else it may seem disrespectful. It is only rational to study a religion in order to decide whether or not that religion have faith. Analyzing religion is related to presuming how society works, whether it insults people or not. Unlike many other societies, American society was erected on one religion which is Christianity. It is this element that has formed the way American society has seen other religions. While United State is expected to be the country that merges all types of ethnicities and religions, children are still obligated to pledge their allegiance to America each day in school. Of recent Christianity has been called into query in the United State more frequent than it has ever has. This is as a result of people finally getting enough courage to say something against the separation of the state and the church, nevertheless there are choices being made for the country founded on Christian values. There are some things that cannot be proven by science, however it cannot be disputed that things are in favor of religion. It is imperative to deliberate on the sociological effects of religion, because in some means it can be damaging. For example looking into the way Christians in America treat those who practice Islam. It is important to educate ourselves on religions and the reason why things are in a certain way in order to attempt to make things better and bring harmony. It can be said sociology as the potential to describe religion, but it cannot influence people to take their own faith in one direction or another. Looking in to religion from a worldwide sense, putting all faiths into one assembly then calling it religion, sociology displays it to be a generally helpful thing for human beings, referring to movements and serenity. This comprehensive look on religion could possibly make an individual’s faith stronger by saying how this religion is in that progressive effort classification. On the other hand, looking at religion from a micro level, breaking down an individual’s faith by reasoning with this faith group gets the situation much more provocative.
