They are calling this the Occupational Physical Assessment Test (OPAT). The OPAT is made up of four different exercises. The exercises that are performed are the standing long jump, the seated power throw, the strength deadlift, and the interval aerobic run. When new recruits are planning on joining the Army, alongside the Armed Services Vocational Battery Test (ASVAB), they will be required to do this test as well. The main function of this addition is to prevent the current situation of having soldiers in MOS’ in which they are incapable of doing. If the soldier is capable of achieving the standard before leaving for basic training, then they will be more likely able to accomplish the difficult tasks of their MOS by the end of their Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Through integrating females in combat jobs, finding a better fit MOS for soldiers currently serving, and ensuring future soldiers are in jobs that they will be able to progress in, we make our forces stronger. This a step in the right direction as an Army that is constantly changing. Too many soldiers are currently serving in jobs that are not suited to them.
