My patient and his grandmother spoke were spanish speaking only and the physician came in and asked if they needed an interpreter for rounds and I said they definitely needed an interpreter to communicate effectively during rounds. Later, during rounds this patient interpreter was very helpful in communicating amongst family members and the medical team. I also satisfied SON’s competency 2.3 Adapts assessment techniques based on client characteristics (e.g. age, culture, development, etc…). I realized my patient began to become very fearful and tearful whenever I grabbed the thermometer or blood pressure cuff. Before taking vital signs or any assessments I would demonstrate on his grandmother what I was going to do and on myself before doing any assessments on him. At the end of the shift, he happy put his finger out for me to take his pulse and was comfortable with me taking his temperature through the tympanic route, and began to be less tearful when I attempted to take his blood pressure at the end of the shift. Overall, I enjoyed working with my patient and I believe I had an excellent therapeutic relationship with him and his
