Growing up I was constantly reminded to do more than whats expected by many women in different time of my life. I often heard my teachers refer to each other sorrors and addressed jokes about the strange embroidered letters on their jackets. Being only 10 and curious, I wanted to know the significance and meaning of the strange letters and defending them was so important. The conversation grew broader than the letters. I was informed about Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and the importance of taking risk, speaking up, sisterhood, and going beyond measure to ensure the needs of other were met.…
My interest for potentially becoming a part of the Psi Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is based on the personal and professional development of its members and the social change that results in equality. I view Psi Theta Omega Chapter as a huge advocate for the metropolitan Orlando area when it comes to the community service and its involvement of its educational growth of its young ladies. These are a major focus that has sparked my interest in understanding what this Sorority does as a whole. I have always been an individual that loves serving the community being that I can make a change within someone’s life by helping them grow mentally and physically.…
“It’s not what it looks like”, this is what the majority of members of a sorority or fraternity would respond after being asked about Greek life. Why is that they feel like they have to say that? One word: Marketing. The way sororities and fraternities are portrayed to the public gives off a bad image and reputation about the members and their community. Any person who has not been part of Greek life and does not have any information about this community and its activities they would think sororities and fraternities are just a big house full of college people just having fun, drinking, and sleeping around.…
1. I participated in the Community Connections pre fall program during my freshman year. I also attended the Encounter with Christ retreat during my freshman year. I attend mass every Sunday and am involved with volunteer services. In addition to working with the volunteer services office, I also do a large amount of service work with my sorority Theta Phi Alpha.…
This type of behavior is extremely common in the state of Alabama where southern roots remain strong in communities. This influence reaches even into the social structure of the south’s biggest universities. Although the racism continues to be present in the University of Alabama Greek system, forced integration would only cause harm to the intricate process and all parties involved. Fraternity and Sorority organizations are private with their own bylaws and traditions. There is no reason for these organizations to be regulated by any university.…
Greeks all speak a language or a lexis that they learn in the process of becoming part of their fraternity/sorority. We sometimes say things that only other Greeks will understand. In addition to the lexis that is shared, they also have different levels of seniority and the Phi, and epsilon) sigma being the beginner and epsilon being the highest seniority. I think this group values the sisterhood/ brother hood bonds that they get out of it. We as greeks love the feeling of meeting new people and being able to connect with them as close as they would with a sibling.…
Before we step into the real world of college, we hear about all the different sororities and fraternities, what goes on, what they act like, and what they do. We all have seem to have our different views of what “Greek life” really is, but have we really observed the people and the things they do? Despite the ongoing stereotypes we hear about Greek Life on college campuses, being involved here at UCM seems to be very beneficial for not only the students, but the community too. Yes, there are true and false stereotypes for the different sororities or fraternities here at UCM, but if you take a look at what Greek life does around campus, you are able to see the different values they uphold and how they interact with everyone on campus. One of the most popular stereotypes you hear about Greek Life on campus is that, everyone in them is not in college for the education, they are just here to have a good time.…
Breaking Stereotypes One Step At a Time Greek life contributes a lot to the average college community. Whether it being, giving student’s connections, philanthropy, or providing a fun atmosphere for several stressed college students. The affect it has on the students individually is huge too. Fraternity’s and sorority’s push each member to reach outside their comfort zone, and to strive for excellence in academics, community involvement, and personal development. “Greeks all speak a “language” that they learn in the process of becoming part of their fraternity/sorority.…
Throughout my college career, I have had many memorable achievements and gained lots of knowledge on valuable lessons. Yet there are specific lessons and achievements that stand out. Last year, I had the privilege of being asked to join Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society at UCR, which recruits the top 20% of all undergraduate students. By joining and becoming actively involved with the organization, I was fortunate enough to be offered the position of Vice- President of the organization, which is the most meaningful achievement I have had so far.…
We as a species are bound to live in a network of human relationships while creating communities as we do it. Delta Sigma Phi is the culture I am exploring for the next few weeks. Though it goes under the “Greek Life” concept, they have their own unique ideas and rituals that set them apart from the rest. Aside from films and novels, I never heard the term fraternity and sorority anywhere else.…
Sororities can give you a sense of belonging and the events done by sororities can give you something to do in college providing great memories. Sororities also help you to stay focused on school. As said in Amanda Smith’s story there were required study hall times. (Nuwer, 141) Also when talking to sorority members at local colleges they said they had required study hours as well. Sarah Belle, in her question and answer video on sororities, was asked “Is it difficult to keep your grades up while participating in sorority events?”…
For example, research has shown that African American college students that participate in a Greek organization enhances their leadership and academic skills (Kimbrough, 2003). The one thing that is critical for all three of these organization is involvement. If a person is involved they are more likely to be engaged in their community and school and not have time for nonsense. They are learning the importance of community, leadership and being a role model for the younger generation.…
I am interested in membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., because of what Delta represents. To me Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. represents strong, educated black woman that are dedicated to improving their community. When I was a child I always said that I wanted to improve my community. As I grew up I saw how children from impoverished homes were not always exposed or given the opportunity to achieve a better life. That’s when I realized that we have to help our youth in order to see a change in our community.…
Greek life on campus is an aspect of upper education that is publicized often, many proclaiming the social and educational benefits of living with your peers, but has a significant amount of negative stigma attached to it. Although the tales told of fraternities and sororities are sometimes exaggerated, there are many more cases where Greek life organizations have garnered copious amounts of attention for controversial behavior. In Fraternity and Sorority Alcohol Use: Does Race Matter?, Michael Capece, David Schantz, and Rebecca Wakeman expound upon one of these behaviors, specifically detailing the general perception of alcohol consumption within fraternities and sororities and across two different races, from the point of view of research.…
