During my senior year of high school, I distributed a survey on reading to all students as research for an article I was penning for the school newspaper. In response to the question, "Do you read recreationally?" one anonymous student wrote, "Why would I?" I will never forget that slip of paper. His words not only left me infuriated, but also—for once in my life—at a loss for words. Looking around, I found that the most some classmates were willing to read was an Instagram caption, and far too many were more familiar with Twitter 's 140 characters than literature 's infinite ones. Thus, exposure to the magic of creativity in childhood becomes all the more essential. Among the clicks and scrolls and double-taps of our thoroughly technological world, children must remember to pause for a moment and browse their minds instead of a smartphone. Last summer’s internship with Educational Solutions Consulting (ESC) serves as a particularly apt springboard to a Summer 2016 internship with Baboró. With ESC, I delved directly into event planning and promotion as I successfully organized three national entrepreneurial conferences for the company CEO: negotiating with directors of sales, securing lodging and catering for 90 guests, devising daily schedules, creating vibrant event websites and Welcome Packs, and advertising the upcoming conferences via social media platforms. My internship was incredibly rewarding in fine-tuning my marketing skills—however, I can’t even imagine how fulfilling it would be to employ these same skills for the promotion of the arts.
