What makes a person insane? Could it be their behavior, mental patterns, or even a chemical imbalance? One could say that guilt could lead a person to become insane. Guilt is an emotion that everybody experiences. Guilt shows us that there can be afflictive consequences for bad decisions. In “Tell Tale Heart the narrator wants to kill an old man because of his vulture eye. When the narrator succeeds in killing him he starts to hear things and then confesses what he has done. In “Squeaky Boots” Mr. Krabs gives a pair of boots to his daughter who refuses to ever wear them. Mr. Krabs then gives the boots to SpongeBob in exchange for his paycheck. In “Tell Tale Heart” the narrator in the end confesses his guilt to the police officers, just like Mr. Krabs confesses to everyone in the Krusty Krab. When the narrator of “Tell Tale Heart” confesses he says, “Villains I shrieked dissemble no more I admit the deed tear up the planks” (Poe 306). This quote shows how the narrators’ guiltiness leads him to confessing. In SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs took the boots from SpongeBob because he hated the squeaking sound. SpongeBob feels terrible thinking that he lost the boots, because he thought they were important to Mr. Krabs. Mr. Krabs then feels so much guilt that he confesses. When Mr. Krabs confesses he says, “Stop it! Stop it! Oh can you hear it? Yes I did it! I did it! I took the boots! They’re here under the floorboards! Oh please make it stop” (SpongeBob). The main actions in “The Tell Tale Heart” are when the narrator killed the old man, he heard the sound of what he thought was the heartbeat of the dead old man, and then confessed his guilt because he thought he was going crazy. When the narrator heard the sound he says, “ It was a low quick sound. I gasped for breath and yet the officers heard it not” (Poe 306). This quote shows how the narrator is going crazy, and is hearing a sound that is not actually there. When In “Squeaky Boots” Mr. Krabs feels so guilty that all he can hears is squeaking. In fact, when he looks at the menu he is confused to see only the word squeak (SpongeBob). This leads Mr. Krabs to thinking that he is insane. One of the consequences that presents itself in both of these stories is guilt. Both characters feel its presence and it leads them to confessing. Another consequence would be insanity. The guilt came from either killing the man or taking the boots, and then they both started going insane hearing things that weren’t really there.
