St Benedict had a wealthy family with many privileges and a good education, him and his twin sister were born into a Christian family. His father was Euprobo and his mother was Claudia Abundantia. St Benedict put together 12 communities of monks, no one had ever set up communities like his before. His sister, St Scholastica also lived nearby to live a religious life. Around this time in Europe there was a lot of disease and violence . Many of the public came to him to ask if he could provide shelter for them. Some people even decided to become part of the monastery. St benedict took them in and provided them with shelter. St benedict also wrote this book called “ The Rule Of Saint Benedict” which had a huge effect on the people living in the monastery at this time. The book had 73 chapters on how monks should live and behave. Many modern day monasteries still live by his rule. The book had a set of rules created to teach the monks, priests, nuns and sisters how to live a life like Benedict himself. This book was very harsh and hard to live by and the monks weren't happy with this rule as before they tried to get rid of St Benedict by poisoning
