This style was embraced by Americans who then added their own tastes to it. It began to change from the previous design style of Georgian style to the federal style. This style was primarily brought to the United States by way of British pattern books as well as masons and carpenters who traveled from England.
The name Federal-style architecture is named for classic architecture built in the United States between 1780 and 1830. This styles stems from the Federal Period. The Federal style was also used with furniture in the United States during this time and was most popular along the Atlantic coast. Some Characteristics of the federal style include bright interiors with large windows and white walls and ceilings. This can be seen in the Massachusetts State House.
Charles Bulfinch was one architect that designed the state house. He brought the federal style of domes, columns and ornaments that was seen during early 19th century architecture. The Bulfinch house still stands today with its red brick walls, white pillars and trim, and golden dome. The Building was completed in 1798 and has been enlarged since.
