Personalities of characters in movies and tv shows have qualities that are completely unnatural for most people to have. For example, in 13 Reasons Why several teenagers in the show act irrationally. Specifically, Hannah Baker appeared to be antagonized by even the smallest things as seen by her overreaction when she does not receive compliments on slips of paper. Regarding Clay, auditory and visual hallucinations formed as a result of Hannah’s death is also an extreme grieving method and one almost no one truly goes through. Teenagers are very unlikely to lash out over minor conflicts. Also when high schoolers are depressed or grief stricken they are not likely to experience stages of grief as serious as what is portrayed. Like other demographics, most teenagers will not end up going through the extremes in reaction to very troublesome experiences. Within Superbad, teenagers are inaccurately portrayed in order to garner laughs. For example, several teens are shown drawing many crude images during class. Almost all teenagers have experienced boredom to some extent within a class. Some even doodle at the same time. However, it’d be unruly for someone to draw images that they know would bring them consequences. In Superbad as well as 13 Reasons Why, parties are presented as large ordeals that are life altering moments. However party life amongst high schoolers is mostly kept at a minimum and when parties are thrown they are just slightly more different than hang outs with a friend group. Furthermore, the home life of most teenagers aren’t as hectic as some make it out to be. In 13 Reasons Why, almost all characters are depicted as struggling with inner demons, as seen through one character who abuses heroin, one who mourns over the death of his friend, and another who lives with deadbeat parents. Of course, it is important to note that some high schoolers may have some struggles in their home life, at least for HHS it is safe to assume that most teenagers have a relatively normal home life. Most teenagers have some problems consisting of different circumstances but it is unlikely that most have problems as serious of a degree as 13 Reasons why chooses to present. There is a guarantee that a decent portion of HHS students life a very normal and at some points mundane lifestyle. The media presents adolescents’ lives as one filled with struggle and life changing moments while in reality most of America goes through regular lifestyles, so it should be reasoned that teenagers also live without constantly encountering
