Excessive Force is deemed as the application of more force than is deemed necessary to effect an arrest. February 4, 1999 Amadou Diallo was killed because New York City policemen shot him 19 times because they concurred he was reaching for a weapon. The policemen were searching for a possible rape suspect in the proximity to Amadou Diallo’s apartment located in the Bronx. However,when Mr. Diallo reached for his pocket the officers fired 41 shots, 19 of which hit and killed him. After the body was identified Amadou Diallo was found having no criminal record and was unarmed (Amadou Diallo). Amadou Diallo case was one of the ten most famous reports of police brutality witnessed in American history, however thousands of occurrences similar to Mr.Diallo's case go unreported, due to the fear evoked in the public's eye. Excessive force not only causes the untimely death of thousands, but additionally scares thousands of individuals. This further increases the “us” vs “them” mentality and labels the police force as a “white male justice system which specializes in the arrest, prosecution, and convictions of people of color.” (Champion). In order to break this separation in law enforcement, diversification would help reflect the police departments surrounding communities. A report published by Columbia Law School illustrates that the occurrences of forceful outbreaks decreases when the race of the police force correlate with the environment it’s located in (Legewie). In order to do so, state and local police forces could focus on recruiting individuals of color, beginning with minors. The law enforcement community also has a minute number of women serving, although women bring a different aspect to the police force. The National Center for Women in Policing claimed in a report of 7 police departments that women are less probable to use excessive force (Lonsway).A prime issue regarding police brutality is the racial component.
