Hale is the final decision if someone lives or if they are to hang. He is manipulated by Abigail Williams and the girls. In the beginning of the play Hale is fueling the fire of the witch trials, getting people to confess. If anyone is to hang, it is because of him. However, as the play goes on, Hale begins to experience a change of heart. He is the first person of power to believe that John Proctor is telling the truth, and the Abigail is lying. This was a very hard thing for him to do because Danforth, Parris, and all others in power believed Abigail. This was a very tough test but he managed to gain the courage to overcome it. The characters in the play personify the definition of a crucible. John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Reverend Parris are all pushed to their breaking point. They all faced severe tests with each other, and with others. They were all broken at one point or another, but in the end their sense of good prevailed.
