A subcutaneous injection is a shot of medicine that is injected into the layer of fat that lies between skin and muscle. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin because their bodies do not make it. People with type 2 diabetes may require insulin. There are many different types of insulin. The type of insulin that you take will determine how many injections you give yourself and when you need to take the injections.

The needle should be at a 90-degree angle as described above in Single Insulin: Injecting the Insulin. For children who have a small amount of body fat, the needle may need to be injected at a 45-degree angle instead. A 45-degree angle looks like the letter "V."
5 When the needle is completely inserted into the skin, use the thumb of your writing hand to push the top button of the pen down all the way to inject the insulin.
