The people of Sumer were great inventors. Sumer was a city-state of achievement because of their inventions and their strong faith in their religion. Cuneiform is an invention they made which is like the way they communicate without speaking. Cuneiform is when you write in a wet clay tablet with a stylist. In schools in the city of Sumer, only a few boys went to school and there were mostly no girls. In their schools, the kids would most likely grow up to be scribes.
One of the main reasons city-states fought was to gain the precious waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. They made their walls from thick mud bricks so no one can destroy them and attack the city. The ancient Sumerians were among the first to develop writing. Because they left written records, the legacy of Mesopotamia has not been lost yet.

Hammurabi was a forceful ruler. He built dams to control the water of the river. Silver, timber, copper, wine, and other trade goods from fertile crescent came into Babylon to make them wealthy.Hammurabi one day took over of all Mesopotamia. An archaeologist discovered a 6 foot pillar with a picture of Hammurabi and 200 of his laws carved in cuneiform. His laws were found all over his empire. After the death of Hammurabi the Babylonian Empire began to weaken. Assyria then began to conquer the Fertile Crescent. For 1,000 years Babylon was powerful and wealthy. One day, Hammurabi died and their empire weakened. After they weakened, Babylon lost its power but continued to be a wealthy and important
