`To start with, both stories dealt with the impact on the characters education. In the Composition, while Pedro is attending school a captain comes on behalf of Pinochet and disturbs the children's education. He instructs them to write a composition that has to include “what [their] parents do from the time [they get] home from school and work.” (Skarmeta 85). In order to prevent his family from being taken away, Pedro is put in a situation where he has to lie about what his parents do at home. This puts a burden on Pedro as he is just a child and is getting involved in a serious government matter when he should just be learning. In Panache, the story beings with Silas, Frank, and Tom in a classroom. They are ending off their school year and course in mechanics. The characters are writing letters of business to find jobs at a mine. Frank isn’t able to write is letter himself as he is illiterate.This was shown when Silas had to write Frank's letter because he wasn’t able to write it himself. The Native Americans weren’t placed in an education plan that provided them with a better education. This impacted them as some weren’t even able to write to apply for a job. This was shown when Silas said, “ I have to write Frank- Fence- post’s letter because he is only able to write most of his name.” (Kinsella 177). In The Composition, Pedro constantly felt as if he wasn’t safe. The story takes place in Chile. Pedro’s parents were always listening to the radio. His parents did this so they could be updated on any dangers occurring within the country. They were constantly afraid of what would happen to them, as they were antifascist. This resulted in Pedro feeling unsafe and asking his father “[if they were] going to take [him to] prison, too?” (Skarmeta 84). Thus, showing that Pedro was afraid for his and his parents safety. Furthermore, the political situation in the story wasn’t stable and it was in the order of a fascist government. Which meant that the characters within the story had no say over anything occurring within their country. In Panache, the characters had an impact on their safety as well. Frank, Tom, and Silas got hired at a mine in the story. Before they started their job, they lived with an old white couple. The three men weren’t sure what to expect from them as they were “white people. The men questioned their safety as they were judged for who they were on several occasions. Furthermore, the safety of the characters is impacted when they are given odd labor jobs. For example, Frank was assigned the job of standing back while the trucks backed up. His job was to signal the drivers of when to move their trucks back or front. The other white employees would try running him over
