The symbolism used in this story adds suspense to the plot. The symbolism used in this story were the China Figures and how they correspond with the Little Indian Poem. Each time someone had died, they died because of the poem. Each time someone did die, one china figure would disappear. “He was staring at the China figures in the centre of the table...I could’ve sworn there were ten of them” (Christie 74). This makes the mood suspicious because who knows who’s taking those figures away- or if they are even getting taken away. Maybe Mr. Rogers misplaced them. If not, what is happening with them? This makes the reader want to know more about this occurrence. On page 95, the text states, “It’s those figures sir… Ten of them, there were… There’s only eight.” This shows that those figures are definitely disappearing and going somewhere. They can’t be vanishing out of thin air. Now that the reader knows this, they would have to figure out why they’re disappearing. Which makes the reader want to know more.
