Companies use the consumers’ general knowledge of Greek mythology and their assumptions about the myths’ plots and characters to sell their products. One of the most notable examples is the prominent Italian fashion company, Versace, whose logo consists of a symbol of Medusa’s head. Versace has one of the most iconic and recognizable logos in the fashion industry and the logo was deliberately chosen in order to represent the company and its products. In Greek mythology, Medusa is a Gorgon known for her absolute beauty and renowned delicacy before she offended the goddess Athena and was transformed into a horrific monster that turned anyone that glances at her into stone. Although it is simple, this general background of Medusa is enough to explain the ideals behind the fashion company’s logo. In terms of the modern corporation, Nike is an appropriate name as the term “Nike” suggests agility, speed, and victory; all of which are qualities that a sportswear company would desire and want to advertise.
