Erica was portrayed as AmErica, beautiful and flawless from the outside but once observed closely or “through a magnifying lens” as Changez said, one would notice something broken behind her eyes “like a tiny crack in a diamond...” (Hamid 52). America from this interpretation is not the perfect place everybody ought it to be but it comes with its flaws as well, and with Changez being smitten by her as soon as he laid eyes, was the same way he reacted when reaching the States. Chris on the other hand can be said to be tied to the word “Christian” or “Christ”, both are entities separate from Changez seem to pull Erica far from him. This title can be argued to have given the book some sort of identity itself. And judgment always emerges when eyes lay on the title. What does Mohsin Hamid mean by something that is reluctant and a fundamentalist at the same time? What does it meant to be described as such?
