For my final segment assignment, I made a 3D Model Memorial. There are many items and meanings that are inside the jar I made. There are rocks, photographs, a ring, a necklace, bits of bread, (fake) jewels, several doll shoes, one die, a quote taped around the perimeter, and a Star of David drawn on the lid. Each of these materials were put in this jar for a reason. The rocks represent that the Jews put them on Schindler’s grave. The photographs in the jar are in black and white, and are of my two friends (one being Elizabeth) and I. They represent how so many memories were lost during the Holocaust and how they were just thrown into huge piles of other dead remembrances. The ring in particular represents the ring that was given to Schindler in the movie, Schindler’s List. The several pairs of tiny doll shoes represent how the many Jewish men were lined up against the edge of a wall where when they were shot, they would fall into the water. It also represents all of the Jews’ belongings and how they were shown in Schindler’s List being thrown into huge piles, just to be thrown away unless valuable. The die in the jar represents how some Jews were lucky and how some Jews unfortunately weren’t. I chose a die in particular because I used a board game as an analogy to the Holocaust: Some Jewish people were able to roll the die and get to the end of the board game, but some people rolled the die and lost within the first few rounds. The quote taped around the perimeter of the jar represents how that same quote was engraved in the ring that was given to Schindler in the movie that we watched. I think that it is a very good explanation of how many tried their best, and even though none of them could save every single person in the Holocaust, it made a difference for that one person.
