It is an X-ray of the breast, and is an effective way to find the cancer early. It is important to find cancer early so you get started on treatment plans before the cancer gets worse. If a person finds cancer early they have a better chance of beating the cancer. A breast MRI is also another way to find cancer in the breast. The MRI takes pictures of the breast using magnets and radio waves. MRI’s are only used for women at high risk of getting breast cancer, it is used along with the mammogram. After the patient is diagnosed with breast cancer their doctor will present various treatment plans, the ultimate decision is based on the patients personal choice. The benefits and risks are different depending on each treatment plan. A big accomplishment has been “in recent years, there’s been an explosion of life-saving treatment advances against breast cancer, bringing new hope and excitement” (BreastCancer.org) Patients these days have an overwhelming list of treatment options to choose from. During this month various events go on to bring attention and gain support for breast cancer. For women who have been cleared from breast cancer it is a time for celebration and spreading awareness. The mission of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to “help those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services” (National Breast Cancer Foundation). There are events and walks to honor the people who are battling or have battled breast cancer. Various events for breast cancer will raise money that is then donated to American Cancer Society. That money is used for “fight the disease with research, information and services, and access to mammograms for women who need them” (Making Strides Against Breast Cancer). Sports teams in October will have a “pink out night” to raise awareness and help get the word out about breast cancer.
