Being a farfetched idea, I believe Szymborska could possibly be alluding to the experience she has had with World War in the past. Being raised in Poland in the early 20th century, Szymborska was forced to live through the horrors of World War 2. I feel as if the attacks may possibly have reminded her of what had happened to the world in the past and what led to it. Possibly, September 11, could have been similar to a day in World War 2 which could have triggered an idea of what could possibly come in the future. After realizing what could come in the future, she wrote about stopping time in a photograph and staying in the present so there wouldn’t be a possibility of the horrific future. Allusions aid an individual in understanding a poem to a better extent, since there happens to be a factual incident or person to which you can relate the poem to.
