The skill of note taking is very important for students to possess, in order to learn as much as they can. Effective note taking consists of three stages. First, you set the stage for taking notes. Second, you record your information. Lastly, you review your notes at a later time (Ellis, 2014). There are many ways you can take your notes, ranging from pen and paper to laptops and other technology. Notes are a great way to prepare for tests, refresh your memory, and establish a personal connection to the learned material. If taken in ways that best fit you, they can help you on your journey to being a successful student.

I personally disagree. I have a wide variety of note taking styles, and know what works for me. Outlining is my preferred way to take notes in subjects like English or writing and composition classes. It makes sense to have main topics and elaborate underneath them. It keeps the information in chronological order and all together with related material. In math related classes, I like to use plenty of examples and explanations. Writing the problem, and step by step solutions is helpful to guide me through other problems in the future! In science based subjects, I use lots of note cards. I write the topic on the solid white side, and information about it on the lined side. I use the cards to quiz myself and memorize the information. I really enjoy highlighters and sticky notes. I use different colors of highlighter to keep information together when I find it relates. It helps when writing papers from textbooks, because it gives you a guideline of what it will say. You can just follow along and if you get stuck, just move on to the next highlighted phrase. Sticky notes are wonderful if you have a question and would like to go back to it. When you have your answer, you just have to peel it off and toss it in the trash! They are also convenient to have to take little impromptu notes.
