The technical world and the animal kingdom may not seem to have a lot in common however with recent advances in technology, endangered animals are being given a better chance at keeping from extinction and scientists are learning more about all kinds of animals and their habitats through technology. Researchers are using many kinds of devices such as GPS, surveillance cameras and tracking devices to keep a close eye on endangered species as well as gain knowledge. Using technology to monitor wildlife not only keeps these animals safe from poachers, but also provides vital information to scientists.
Technology is used to research animals and their habitats in many different ways. Just as companies are using technology and asset protection devices to protect inventory, scientists …show more content…
Hi-Tech tagging tools and sensors are being used to track physical locations, movements of animals across land and also to measure changes in the animals environment’s and bodies. A scientific director at the Ocean Tracking Network, Sara Iverson, said “We’ve made tremendous advances by actually using animals to act as oceanographers for us.” Iverson and her team are using solar-powered GPS tags to follow seals under the water and also to study stork migration routes. The data gained in this use of technology not only provides information about the animals being tracked but also about the animals they interact with and their eco-system as a whole. Another way technology has proven effective in the animal kingdom is the use of text messaging. Wildlife managers have been using GPS to monitor dangerous animals such as great white sharks and now some managers receive a text message whenever these tagged sharks are swimming close to shore. Knowing these sharks are close to shore allows the wildlife managers to alert the public and avoid human to shark
