John Adams in 1800 was the first election, where both parties ran candidates and campaigned. Shortly after the election, the 12th Amendment was passed making, the Electoral College similar. Slaves were aware of the concept and wanted it. The year of 1800 also was one of the first large-scale slave uprising, called Gabriel’s Rebellion. As result, Virginia made its laws concerning slaves much harsher. Jefferson’s goals was to make the government smaller, lower taxes, shrink military and make America become a bucolic, agrarian, empire of liberty. Jefferson got rid of all taxes except for the tariff, then paid of part of the national debt and shrunk the army and navy. This became a problem, when the navy was not able to protect their ships from foreigners. Jefferson doubled the size of the U.S. in the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson also imposed the embargo to punish Britain, but it was not successful. Britain and France was busy at war to notice America’s embargo. This devastated the American economy. This eventually led to the United States’ first declared
