The Bill of Rights were greatly flawed, therefore it left a huge equal rights hole between women and the African American races. In reality the bill of rights only benefited the propertied white men in those times. Although in “Amendment 14 Section 1” It clearly states that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” This amendment was meant for every individual who were human beings. but let’s not get too ahead, though this amendment may be true women did not get their equal rights or even allowed to vote until the 1920s this was the 19th amendment. May I also mention the Native Americans that were deprived of their land also weren’t allowed these rights as freely as the white men. This caused the Bill of Rights to be forced for one hundred and thirty five years before the Native Americans were granted U.S Citizenship and given them all the rights as an American citizen instead of an alien …show more content…
After years of civil war and additional amendments were added to the bill everyone including the slaves was granted full rights and citizenship. The amendments added later consisted of: 11- lawsuits against states, 12- presidential elections, 13- Abolition of slavery, 14- civil rights, 15- black suffrage, 16- income taxes, 17- senatorial elections, 18- prohibition of liquor, 19- women’s suffrage, 20- terms of office, 21- repeal of prohibition, 22- term limits for the presidency, 23- Washington, d.c., suffrage, 24 abolition of poll taxes, 25- presidential succession, 26- 18 year old suffrage, 27- congressional pay raises. Even though in today’s society we may have had a few conflicts, for example a sixteen year old atheist had a problem with prayer being in school. She felt that it violated Amendment one with freedom of religion. She was stating that they were forcing their Christian belief unto her because they had to say the prayer every day. This caused the states to remove prayer from the classrooms. So you want to know how the Bill has changed over time “We the people” are still striving to do better with laws and striving to do what is supposed to be the best for the country. As long as this country is up and running there will always be a conflict and there will always be some modifications to our laws.
