In Frank Baum’s book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, he presents the themes of colors to represent different roles within the novel. Within the last few chapters, colors have been prevalent in reading. The role of color is an important aspect in literature as it improves the reader’s understanding of the setting and theme. Authors often also use colors to symbolize a deeper meaning that can pull the reader into the story. Without the use of colors as symbolism, the readers can sometimes miss underlying morals or themes that they might not directly express.…

Stephen Pastis has used character and style to create a story about an overly confident eleven-year-old who “runs” his own detective agency. Readers may not relate to the detective side of the story, but they will relate to Timmy Failure’s language and humorous reflection on the world around him. Pastis reveals Timmy’s strengths (his vocabulary and imagination) and his weaknesses (he’s clueless and not intrinsically motivated). The reader is able to identify with Timmy and enjoy jumping into his world of mistakes. In addition to character, Pastis’s style keeps the reader engaged through the use of simplistic drawings and a humorous tone.…
We’re all different in one way or another. Often times, being different only means appearance or intelligence wise. But what if all letters and words had a color and texture? Mia Winchell, 13 years old, lives with synesthesia in a book titled A Mango-Shaped Space. Synesthesia is the crossing of two or more senses, and there are many different versions of it.…

As one reads Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crocket Johnson, we see an overwhelming amount of freedom through Harold as his imagination and his crayon take him anywhere he thinks possible. However, with freedom comes limitations. To make sense of the freedom within limits in Johnson's story, we are going to examine a text by Walter Percy called "The Loss of The Creature." In this text, Percy talks about preformulation in symbolic complex. Preformulation is something that is previously formulated by our culture and society.…
The first limit is the way in which we are already told what kind of book this is - it is categorization. My position is not to suggest that Harold and the Purple Crayon is not a kids book, rather it is to claim that it does not have to be read as a kids book. This goes along with what Gadamer stated. Maybe one reads it as a kids book when the reader is a child. Yet, as one continues to read, as Gadamer says, things do not just speak the same; they always change.…
For this assignment, I chose to analyze a children’s book. “A Bad Case of Stripes,” by David Shannon. This book is about a girl named Camilla Cream, who loves to eat lima beans but does not want to eat them because all of her friends disliked the taste of lima beans. Camilla wanted to fit in and is very worried about others opinions of her. Her insecurity disguises itself by turning her body from head to toe into rainbow stripes.…
The Second resource chosen to accompany the theme of injustice in Aboriginal culture written by the same authors as the first resource; Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton and the Children’s picture book is called When I was Eight. Very similar to the Not My Girl, but rather the story’s plot is based around what actually happened to the Aboriginal children who went to the Residential Schools. Olemaun started off wanting to go the “outsiders School” because she really wanted to learn how to read and but quickly realized she was going to have face countless adversity’s in order to reach that goal. The illustrations of the story are clever as it draws the reader in as you the color combinations used are quite vivid. When I was Eight,…
These colors symbolize feelings, such as love, yearning, luxury, and even despair. The most important color of this story would have to be yellow and green. Green being Gatsby’s internal flame for Daisy that is ever burning, and yellow, representing wealth, an important aspect of the story, as we follow the wealthiest people of New York in this time. Color brings new perspective to our lives, influences emotion and keeps our minds…
Some colours are known to be associated with certain feelings and the colours blue and grey are used extensively throughout the picture book. These colours are known to be identified with depression and sadness. The meanings of Tan’s illustrations are reinforced through the use of colour. Shaun Tan stated on his website, “The Red Tree is a story without any particular narrative; a series of distinct imaginary worlds as self-contained images which invite readers to draw their own meaning in the absence of any written explanation.” (www.shauntan.net)…
The development of public schools provides children of all ages and from all social classes a free education and a positive environment. Lynda Barry unfortunately came from a family of lower class, and did not have much growing up. In her article, “The Sanctuary of School”, Barry illustrates a time in her youth when she felt the need to sneak out of her house filled with financial stress, depression, and misery. After sneaking out one morning extremely early, Barry felt the need to walk to school.…
Through the words and pictures in this book, A Bad Case of Stripes, by David Shannon, children are being taught to be themselves. The patterns and images that show up on her skin do not represent what she is feeling on the inside, but instead, she is changing based on what other people are telling her she should be. The illustrations and text of this book interact in order to fill in the gaps for the reader. The pictures enhance what is being said in the book. If you only look at either the words or pictures you would not be able to fully understand the story.…
I choose my Color Poem assignment for the quarter 1 reflection. The expectations on this assignment were that I needed to pick a color and use some senses like feel, sight, and more. I went with dark red. I needed to use figurative and sensory language in this poem. I should have written 15 lines minimum in this poem.…
