Many humans believe they will marry once because they have found there lover and never want to be left without them. In Greek mythology the strength of humans was vast because before Zeus played his hand. Two humans were actually one being. The love these beings had for each other was so great that if one half should die the other would die as well because living without there other half would be more painful than death itself. Zeus did not like how powerful humans were as one, so he cut the one being in two and humans were formed from the halves. Each with two legs, arms, and one head destined to look for their other half for as long as they lived. So when the two beings found each other they can get married and become one again for as long as they lived. In Plato’s Symposium, Socrates enters into a discussion of love and they go into details about origin and the power love has and more. During the discussion Aristophanes tells the story of the humans physically being one and explains when man and women come together they could have children and when man embraces man they could be satisfied and carry on with their other duties. The betrayal by a loved one is close to unforgivable because the time we spend to build a mutual connection cannot be brought back. The very act can create pain for the betrayed and the betrayer. In the moment of explanation it’s hard to look at the person who betrayed you and hear that what you fought for amounted to nothing especially from a loved one. It’s in shame that we confess our faults to our other half but even sometimes the confession cannot be spoken. In the beginning of Symposium, Phaedrus makes the statement that “If a man in love is found doing something shameful, or accepting shameful treatment because he is a coward and makes no defense, then nothing would give him more pain than being seen by the boy he loves” (163). Phaedrus is saying that between two people if one of them should have acted shamefully the most pain would be to the one who committed the shameful act and could not bear to see their loved one feel the pain of knowing there shame. This can be seen in a marriage when one person commits adultery and is sorry of their actions.
